What is an Interlock Device?
If you were recently arrested for Driving While Intoxicated, you may be asked to install an Ignition Interlock Device in your vehicle. You may speed up the legal process by starting to establish a record of sober driving as soon as possible after your arrest.
What is an interlock device?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a breathalyzer that will prevent you from starting your vehicle if it detects alcohol on your breath. In order to start your vehicle, you must blow into the IID.
Once the device determines you have not consumed alcohol, you will be able to start your vehicle. The IID typically also includes a camera mounted on the dashboard of your vehicle that will take your picture to ensure you (the driver of the vehicle) is the person submitting the breath sample.
Where do I get an IID installed?
Several local companies in the Austin area offer interlock services. Schedule an appointment with the company of your choice. When you arrive, they will ask you whether you are there on an attorney referral or court order. If you are under court order to obtain an IID, the company will require a copy of those orders from the court.
How does an IID work?
IIDs come in various models, but typically they are a small electronic device with a mouthpiece. Before you are able to start the car, you will need to power up the device and blow a steady stream of air into the IID until you hear a beeping sound. The IID will then determine your blood alcohol level. Each sample you provide is recorded.
Do I only provide a sample when I start the car?
You may need to provide breath samples at random intervals while you are driving. You may pull over to accomplish this task safely.
What happens if my sample registers as a violation?
The sample you provide must register under a certain limit, which is generally .02 BAC. If you register a blood alcohol level (BAC) above that prescribed limit, you will not be able to start your vehicle. Generally, you are able to retest after a waiting period. Note that multiple violations in a row may result in you being locked out of the IID.
What happens if I am locked out of my IID?
If you are locked out of your IID, you will not be able to operate your vehicle until it has been towed to and serviced by the IID company at an additional fee. If you are driving when this happens, your vehicle will NOT stop automatically. You will be locked out of the vehicle the next time you turn it off.
